THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING

A chapter in light and place.

THE JOURNEY

The Amalfi Coast is a landscape in which the human and natural worlds appear inseparable. Buildings rise from the cliff face while roads, terraces and water fold into one another.

What stayed with me was not a single architectural detail but the rhythm of the whole place: warm stone, blue distance and the movement of sunlight across a coastline shaped over centuries.

IN THE STUDIO

The challenge was to suggest complexity without allowing detail to overwhelm the painting. Architectural forms were simplified into patterns of light and shadow.

Palette-knife marks give the cliff and buildings a physical energy, while more transparent passages preserve the atmosphere of sea and distance.

THE SURFACE

Paint seen at close range.

At distance, the marks resolve into landscape. Up close, the work returns to paint—edges, transparent passages, knife marks and areas where the surface remains deliberately active.
