THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING

A chapter in light and place.

THE JOURNEY

The South Rim holds a scale that is difficult to understand until you stand before it. As evening settled, distance began to flatten into bands of color while the last light gathered along the horizon.

What remained with me was not a photographic record of the canyon, but the feeling of watching ancient stone become briefly incandescent.

IN THE STUDIO

The painting was built with brush and palette knife so broad atmospheric passages could sit beside more physical ridges of paint.

Transparent warmth was allowed to glow through darker passages, preserving the sense that the light came from within the scene rather than simply sitting on its surface.

THE SURFACE

Paint seen at close range.

At distance, the marks resolve into landscape. Up close, the work returns to paint—edges, transparent passages, knife marks and areas where the surface remains deliberately active.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE

Living with the work.

A dramatic opening work in the collection, Fire Over the South Rim establishes the recurring dialogue between vast landscape, transient light and memory.
