THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING
THE JOURNEY
Theodore Roosevelt National Park carries a rugged, open character that feels both immense and unexpectedly quiet. The layered land appears shaped as much by weather and distance as by geology.
Traveling through it, I was struck by how quickly the view changed. A bend in the road could reveal a new rhythm of ridges, shadows and open sky.
IN THE STUDIO
The painting was structured through broad interlocking shapes, allowing the land to feel carved and substantial without becoming overly descriptive.
Earth colors were layered with cooler atmospheric notes, preserving the sense of distance while keeping the foreground physically active.

THE SURFACE
At distance, the marks resolve into landscape. Up close, the work returns to paint—edges, transparent passages, knife marks and areas where the surface remains deliberately active.
