THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING
THE JOURNEY
Fresh snow changes not only the color of a landscape but its rhythm. Familiar forms become quieter, edges soften, and a path can suddenly feel like the strongest line in the scene.
Winter's Walk grew from that sense of reduction—the landscape becoming more spacious precisely because so much had been covered.
IN THE STUDIO
The whites were never treated as pure white. Cool and warm greys were allowed to shift across the surface so the snow retained depth and atmosphere.
Dark structural marks were used sparingly, giving the painting enough definition without disturbing its silence.
FROM THE JOURNAL
Winter landscapes have a way of removing information. In the Journal, Mark reflects on silence, restraint and why what is left out of a painting can become as important as what remains.

THE SURFACE
At distance, the marks resolve into landscape. Up close, the work returns to paint—edges, transparent passages, knife marks and areas where the surface remains deliberately active.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Winter's Walk is one of the collection's most contemplative works, balancing the stronger color of the western and coastal paintings with restraint and quiet.
