THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING

A chapter in light and place.

THE JOURNEY

There is a particular kind of silence that belongs to the mountains after night has fully arrived. The land is still present, but its familiar details recede and the sky begins to carry the greater weight.

The Silence Between Stars grew from that feeling of standing beneath something immeasurably larger than ourselves. The peaks rise sharply against the blue darkness, while the water below holds only fragments of light. I wanted the painting to feel expansive and intimate at the same time — a place of distance, stillness and reflection.

IN THE STUDIO

I built the night through layers of deep blue, allowing shifts in tone to suggest atmosphere rather than describing every cloud or change in the sky. Against that softness, the mountains were worked much more physically, with broken, lighter marks catching their ridges and creating a sense of cold illumination.

The contrast between those surfaces became central to the painting: the open depth of the sky, the tactile weight of the mountains and the quieter movement of the water. The stars were the final punctuation — small marks within an enormous space.

THE SURFACE

Paint seen at close range.

At distance, the marks resolve into landscape. Up close, the work returns to paint—edges, transparent passages, knife marks and areas where the surface remains deliberately active.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE

Living with the work.

The Silence Between Stars belongs to the Moonlight & Nocturnes collection, where darkness becomes a way of simplifying the landscape and allowing atmosphere, memory and suggestion to take precedence.
